Life and Representation
Among the Olympiads of journals that have influenced not only America
but also American journalism, Life owes its success to a photographic
style that transmitted an intense culture of beauty in the widest
possible manner. The chronology of the covers in particular, tells
the story of Western culture from 1936 until today: from Fred Astaire
and Marilyn Monroe, to Princess Diana and Harry Potter, icons of the
20th century who were framed as symbols but even more so as
personalities. Beyond the surface reality, the covers also dedicated
space to the aftermath of war, to conflicts and to victory, as in the
celebrated photo of the American victory over the Japanese (1945)
taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt, in which he immortalized the kiss
between a nurse a Navyman. On Life's website it is now possible to
view a selection of the best covers, but the archives that will the
added in the next few months will recount the all photos of the last
70 years and everyone will be able to relive fragments of the past.
